It can be hard to access quality care. The Telemental Health Program brings specialized eating disorder treatment right to you via your home computer.

Our team is committed to providing evidence-based treatment for people with eating disorders. Many individuals outside of the Baltimore metropolitan area have difficulty accessing trained providers with the expertise to treat eating disorders. In an effort to disseminate our specialized care and offer quality treatment to those at a distance, we are now offering outpatient telemental health services for qualifying individuals using a secure online platform and video connection with psychiatrists and therapists.

Telemedicine has many benefits

Practice guidelines recommend that individuals with eating disorders receive specific treatment delivered by experts  trained to treat these unique disorders. Unfortunately, many underserved areas throughout Maryland are not in close proximity to treatment providers with such expertise. Telemental health can help to bridge some of these geographical gaps for individuals and families across our state.

In general psychiatry, research has shown that telemedicine has benefits equivalent to in-person treatment and that patients are highly satisfied. Eating disorder-specific research suggests that implementation of evidence-based treatments via telemedicine can lead to significant improvements in eating disorder symptoms.

At the Center, we now have the ability to provide evidence-based treatment for eating disorders through a secure online platform in which individuals can be treated in their home environment while providers are located at the Center. Our current telebehavioral health services include:

  • Psychopharmacology/medication management sessions provided by a licensed psychiatrist
  • Individual therapy sessions provided by a licensed psychologist.
  • Family Therapy sessions provided by a licensed psychologist.

Am I a good candidate for telemental health?

Using information technology to provide clinical care from a distance, telemental health allows our psychiatrists and therapists to offer services to children, adolescents and adults who live a considerable distance from our Baltimore office. Appropriate candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Be based in the state of Maryland or Virginia, but approx. 40+ miles away from our office.
  • Have access to reliable technology in the home environment including internet and a computer with a video camera in order to converse with your treatment providers during sessions.
  • Meet clinical indicators for necessity of services
  • Meet safety conditions as assessed by our treatment team

Is it complicated?

Setting up telemental health sessions is easy. After an initial phone assessment is completed and you have verified that you have the appropriate technology to participate, you will be asked to:

  • Complete all initial paperwork and fax or mail back to the office.
  • Complete a "tester call" with our videoconferencing platform prior to the first session.

Once paperwork has been verified and the tester call is completed, your first telemental health session will be scheduled. To prepare for a session all you need to do is:

  • Set yourself up in a private space at your home before the session begins
  • Visit your provider’s secure web link and ensure your camera and audio are connected
  • Start your live session with your provider

What about insurance?

For most CareFirst, United, and Cigna insurance plans, our psychiatry and therapy telemental health services are covered; however, our staff will help you verify individual benefits.  If you have another insurance provider, we are happy to check your insurance benefits to find out if this is a covered benefit
