The Center for Eating Disorders is Committed to the Cause

Caring for the Community:  Eating Disorder Awareness, Education and Prevention

In addition to providing state-of-the-art clinical care for individuals and families affected by eating disorders, The Center also runs a corresponding Community Outreach Department devoted to:

  1. Increasing public awareness about eating disorders, including warning signs, medical consequences, treatment options and the importance of early intervention
  2. Enhancing body image, self-esteem, media literacy and other protective factors in an effort to help prevent the development of eating disorders
  3. Providing recovery-focused support and resourcesfor individuals and families seeking help and those currently in treatment
  4. Advocating for improved legislation pertaining to eating disorder prevention, education and treatment, including insurance coverage policies

With those goals in mind, we host several community events on the Sheppard Pratt campus every year that are free and open to the public, including CED’s Annual Fall Outreach Event and a week-long series of events during National Eating Disorder Awareness Week.  Events often include keynote speakers, book signings, Q&A discussions, free eating disorder screenings and film viewings. CED also hosts continuing education opportunities for treatment providers.

You can view all upcoming and archived events here. In addition, we have established a long history of collaborative community relationships in the Baltimore area and beyond. We can tailor community outreach to the specific needs of any organization, including:

  • Schools and Educators
  • Colleges & Universities
  • Parenting Groups or Family Organizations
  • Mental Health Agencies
  • Youth Organizations
  • Churches, Synagogues and other Religious Institutions
  • Athletic Trainers & Coaches, Sports Teams
  • Employee Assistance Programs
  • Internists, Family Practitioners, Pediatricians, OB-GYNs, Dentists and other medical professionals
