In the past several decades, a globalized media has overwhelmed individuals with public images of idealized, westernized bodies, Increasingly dissatisfied relationships with our bodies, rising pressures from anti-obesity markets and new body-perfecting technologies have led to progressively unstable bodies that become ripe for serious suffering and disorders. More so than in the past, it is imperative that clinicians, particularly those working to treat eating disorders, be aware of both the client’s body distress and their own body’s sensitivity to transferring emotions during the therapeutic process. The Center for Eating Disorders 4th annual Love Your Tree poster art campaign
Submission Deadline: December 18th, 2009
The Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt is inviting Maryland's middle, high school and college students to participate in the 4th annual "Love Your Tree" poster campaign, which aims to promote a healthy body image. Last year's Love Your Tree campaign generated over 180 poster submissions from six different counties across the state of Maryland.
"Love Your Tree" is an inspiring body image campaign based on the work of Eve Ensler, award winning author and activist. In her play "The Good Body," Ensler listens to a wise African woman describe the natural beauty of trees, and she urges Ensler to stop hating her body and appreciate the diversity of beauty. "Eve, look at the tree. Now look at this tree. Do you hate that tree because it doesn't look like this tree? You're a tree, I'm a tree. You've got to love your body Eve. You've got to love your tree!"
In response to the statement, "Like a tree, my body is...", students are invited to create posters that challenge narrow beauty ideals, and embrace body diversity and acceptance. Posters will be accepted from July 17, 2009 until December 18, 2009 and one will be selected for reproduction, which will be displayed as part of an exhibit during National Eating Disorder Awareness Week in February 2010. Participating artists and their families are invited to attend the exhibit and recognition ceremony.
Please download the Call for Posters for additional details. All entries must be submitted along with a completed Registration Form prior to the December 18th, 2009 deadline. Poster entries must be no smaller than 9" X 12" and no larger than 18" X 24". Only two dimensional media will be accepted.
Schools and community groups may register for an art education workshop facilitated by a Center for Eating Disorders art therapist, who will present the body image material and provide an opportunity for students to create a poster entry. Call to schedule a workshop today!

Best-selling author, Jenni Schaefer will speak to the community about life after recovery which she describes from personal experience in her new book, Goodbye Ed, Hello Me: Recover from Your Eating Disorder and Fall in Love with Life.Jenni Schaefer is an internationally known author and speaker whose work has helped provide hope for recovery from eating disorders. Jenni has popularized an approach that enables men and women to personify their illness ("Ed," short for "Eating Disorder") and "divorce" themselves from it. Jenni's previous book, Life Without Ed: How One Woman Declared Independence from Her Eating Disorder and How You Can Too, is an immensely practical guide to recovery based on her personal experience as well as research and a sound behavioral approach. Her latest book, a highly anticipated new release, Goodbye Ed, Hello Me: Recover from Your Eating Disorder and Fall in Love with Life (McGraw-Hill), takes readers a giant step further on her journey and theirs, outlining the path from recovery to liberation.
On her website, www.jennischaefer.com, Jenni writes, "I want people who struggle with eating disorders to know it is possible to move from being 'in recovery' to being 'fully recovered'... I want them to get into life and follow their dreams, not be stuck in or defined by an eating disorder."Please join us for Jenni's presentation at our 2009 community outreach and awareness event this fall.

The Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt Presents its Third Annual "Love Your Tree" Poster CampaignThe Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt is inviting middle and high school students from throughout Baltimore to participate in its third annual "Love Your Tree" poster campaign, which aims to promote healthy body image.
Students are invited to create posters that challenge narrow beauty ideals, and embrace body diversity and acceptance. Posters will be accepted from Sept. 15, 2008 until Dec. 12, 2008 and one will be selected for reproduction, which will be displayed as part of an exhibit during National Eating Disorders Awareness Week – Feb. 22 through Feb. 28, 2009.
"Love Your Tree" is an inspiring body image campaign based on the work of Eve Ensler, the author of the award winning play "The Good Body." In her play "The Good Body," Ensler listens to a wise African woman describe the natural beauty of trees, and urges Ensler to stop hating her body and appreciate diversity. "Eve, look at the tree. Now look at this tree. Do you hate that tree because it doesn't look like this tree? You're a tree, I'm a tree. You've got to love your body Eve. You've got to love your tree!"
For more information on how to participate in the "Love Your Tree" body image campaign, please call the Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt at 410-938-5252.
Poster entries must be no smaller than 9" X 12" and no larger than 18" X 24". Only two dimensional media will be accepted. Participating artists and their families are invited to attend the exhibit during National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. The Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt Receives more than 80 Posters for "Love Your Tree" Campaign
The Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt received more than 80 posters, created by students from five public and private schools in Baltimore County, in response to the Center's second annual "Love Your Tree" campaign. This challenge invited students to create posters that confront narrow ideals about beauty, and embrace body diversity and acceptance. "Love Your Tree" is a body image campaign based on the work of Eve Ensler, the author of the award winning plays "The Good Body" and "The Vagina Monologues."
The posters were displayed and participating students were celebrated during a reception held during National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. One poster was selected for reproduction and it was created by Ariana Vaeth, a seventh grade student at Sudbrook Magnet Middle School, who resides in Windsor Mill. The title of the poster is "Evening Lit-tra-tree", and depicts a girl reading the book "Love Your Tree" under the shade of a loving tree.
More than 60 people attended the reception, including students, their parents and family members, Steven Crawford, M.D., associate director of the Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt, Julia Andersen, Julia Andersen, senior expressive arts therapist at the Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt, and Farrell Maddox, art supervisor at Baltimore County Public Schools.
